At Cameron Veterinary Clinic, we are proud to offer ultrasonography for our patients. Ultrasound uses a machine that generates a picture based on sound waves going through the animal’s tissues. Where x-rays (radiographs) give us a broad picture of an animal’s body, showing us silhouettes of the organs, ultrasound lets us see into and through the organs, giving us a more detailed idea of what is going on inside. Ultrasounds are quick and painless and can usually be performed without need for sedation or anesthesia. An ultrasound exam usually takes 30- 60 minutes to perform.

Using ultrasound, we can see all the organs in an area of your pet’s body, including the abdomen (liver, gall bladder, stomach, intestines, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands and urinary bladder), chest (heart and lungs) as well as joints and extremities. We can even take biopsy samples or fluid samples, using the ultrasound to guide the biopsy needle into the appropriate location. A local anesthetic is all that is usually needed to obtain these samples.

We also do echocardiograms with ultrasound. An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart where we can see it beating and take specific measurements to assess heart function. We commonly do this when your pet has developed a heart murmur, or other signs that lead us to believe that the heart is not working properly. Dr. Cameron has received additional training in echocardiography in order to be able to offer this service to our clients.

We use state-of-the-art equipment so we can diagnose and treat your pet as quickly as possible. We are proud to be able to offer this service. It helps us to achieve our goal of helping our patients and clients as quickly as possible.
